Operating
Instructions
Welcome to the world of Melno watering innovation. Thank
you for choosing the Melno Automatic Rain Monitor. With the
Automatic Rain Monitor, you will avoid unneeded and wasteful
watering while protecting the health and beauty of your valuable lawn
and garden.
Set-up Instructions
Follow the water timer manufacturers instructions to set-up your
timer and sprinkler. However, instead of attaching the hose directly
to the sprinkler, attach Melno Automatic Rain Monitor to the
sprinkler and the hose to the Rain Monitor. If your sprinkler has a
filter washer in place, replace it with the extra hose washer included
with the Rain Monitor.
After everything is attached, turn on the water and allow water
to run through the timer using its manual on feature. (See timer
manufacturer’s instructions on how to do this.) You need to run
the water until the hose is filled and water begins to flow from the
sprinkler. This removes air from the hose that could effect operation
of the Monitor. It is important that the sprinkler with the Monitor
attached be placed on level ground.
Once installed, there is no need to do anything else. If the cup
collects 70ml of water (about ½” of rainfall), the Automatic Rain
Monitor will prevent watering at the next scheduled watering time.
The Monitor then resets and drains itself to begin monitoring for the
following watering cycle.
Checking to See If the Monitor is Level Enough to Operate
Properly
After setting up your sprinkler and Automatic Rain Monitor on a level
surface, you can check to make certain the area is level enough to
operate properly. Open the top of the unit andll it until over-flowing
with water. The lowest level of the water should not be below the
first line inside the unit. (see illustration) If the water is below this line
at any point, reposition the sprinkler with the Monitor attached and
refill with water.
Once you have determined the Monitor is level enough to operate
correctly, remove the water by gently pulling the Drain Knob outward
until drained completely.
After setup, the Monitor may take up to one hour to fully drain and
begin functioning.
Cleaning
In order to ensure your Rain Monitor is operating correctly it is a good
idea to clean it. You will need to detach it from the sprinkler and the
hose. Remove thelter (see illustration) and rinse away any debris
inside the unit. Dump the water and pull the drain knob to empty
any water from inside the unit. After cleaning, simply set up the unit
again using the Set-up Instructions.
If you live in an area with hard water, you may need to further clean
the unit. Open the top cover and remove the rainlter. In a bucket,
prepare a solution of equal parts vinegar and water. Submerge the
unit for 1 hour. Flush unit with clear water and re-assemble.
Operating Tips
The Melnor® Automatic Rain Monitor should operate with any
sprinkler with a minimum output of 2 gallons per minute. Most
sprinklers have an output over 4 gallons per minute and works with
most low-pressure, drip or soaker hoses.
The closer the unit is to level, the more accurate it measures rainfall.
Be as careful as possible when leveling the unit. Be certain nothing is
blocking the unit from rainfall.
